Our teaching of Religious Education is based on the Suffolk agreed syllabus, which places emphasis on pupils’ exploration of meaning, purpose and value in the study of all religions. Through this approach, children are expected to develop their own beliefs, and respect the rights of other people to hold beliefs different to their own.
We use The Emmanuel Project as an RE scheme of work for EYFS to Y6 which covers the Suffolk Agreed Syllabus for RE. It has been written by the Diocesan Schools’ Adviser in consultation with local teachers and advised by members of different faiths.
The aim of our RE lessons is to support children to learn both about and from religions. Children will learn about major world religions as well as reflecting on key questions. Religion is hugely important all around the world as well as within our own community. It forms a centre to many people’s lives and guides their behaviour and relationships. The teaching of RE enables children to appreciate their own and others’ beliefs and cultures. Our RE lessons intend to promote religious understanding and respect, and to challenge prejudice, discrimination and stereotyping. We provide opportunities for children to explore and express their own responses and personal beliefs in a respectful and caring environment which in turn promotions each child’s self-worth, enabling them to reflect on their uniqueness as human beings, to share their feelings and emotions with others and to appreciate the importance of forming and maintaining positive relationships.
